Quick answer

A QBO file is the Web Connect format QuickBooks uses for bank downloads. Upload a PDF statement, check the reconciliation, and download a .qbo file you can import into QuickBooks Online (Banking › Upload transactions) or QuickBooks Desktop (File › Utilities › Import › Web Connect Files).

How to do it

  1. 1

Upload the PDF bank or credit card statement.

  2. 2

    Confirm the statement reconciles.

  3. 3

    Download the .qbo file.

  4. 4

Import it into QuickBooks and match it to the right account.

Why QBO instead of CSV for QuickBooks

  • QuickBooks Desktop does not import bank CSV files natively — Web Connect (QBO) is the supported route.
  • Each transaction carries a stable FITID, so importing the same statement twice does not create duplicates.
  • Credit card statements are written with the credit card message set, so QuickBooks treats charges and payments correctly.
  • Check numbers are included where the bank prints them, which helps QuickBooks match cleared checks.

About the bank ID (INTU.BID)

QuickBooks only accepts QBO files that name a financial institution it recognises. We include a widely accepted default ID; if your QuickBooks setup expects a specific bank, you can change it when exporting. The data inside the file — dates, amounts, payees — is always taken from your own statement.

Fixing QuickBooks import errors

Most QBO import problems come from the account type (bank vs credit card) or from QuickBooks Desktop being outdated. Our help article on QuickBooks imports walks through the common error codes and fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the QBO file work with QuickBooks Online and Desktop?

Yes. QuickBooks Online imports QBO through Banking › Link account › Upload from file; QuickBooks Desktop imports it through File › Utilities › Import › Web Connect Files.

Can I convert credit card statements to QBO?

Yes. Credit card statements are exported with QuickBooks' credit card structure so purchases and payments land with the right sign.

Will importing twice create duplicate transactions?

No. Each transaction gets a deterministic ID derived from its date, amount and description, and QuickBooks skips IDs it has already seen for that account.

What's the difference between QBO and QFX?

Both are OFX-based. QBO is QuickBooks' Web Connect dialect; QFX is Quicken's. For Quicken use our OFX/QFX-compatible export.
