Quick answer

Xero imports statement files in CSV, OFX and QIF formats, not PDF. Convert the PDF with us, download the Xero CSV (pre-mapped columns) or OFX, then in Xero open the bank account and choose Manage Account › Import a Statement.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Upload the PDF statement.

  2. 2

    Review the reconciled transactions.

  3. 3

    Download Xero CSV or OFX.

  4. 4

In Xero, import the statement into the matching bank account.

Xero CSV vs OFX

Xero CSV uses Xero's own column names, so the mapping step is instant and you can see payees and references clearly. OFX is a good choice when you want Xero to skip duplicates automatically. Both include signed amounts so Xero shows spent and received correctly.

Date format and Xero region

Xero reads CSV dates according to your organisation's region. We default the Xero CSV to DD/MM/YYYY (UK, Australia, New Zealand) and you can switch to MM/DD/YYYY for US organisations.

Frequently asked questions

Can Xero read PDF bank statements?

No. Xero imports CSV, OFX and QIF statement files, or receives transactions from bank feeds. Converting the PDF is the way to bring in missing periods.

Why did Xero say the statement contains no transactions?

Usually the date format didn't match your Xero region. Re-export with the other date format and try again.
