Quick answer

Adjusted bank balance = statement ending balance + deposits in transit − outstanding checks. Adjusted book balance = ledger balance + bank credits not yet recorded − bank charges not yet recorded. The two adjusted balances must be equal; any remaining difference is an error to investigate.

How to use the calculator

  • Enter the ending balance from your bank statement and from your general ledger for the same date.
  • List deposits you've recorded that the bank hasn't (deposits in transit) and checks that haven't cleared (outstanding checks).
  • List items the bank recorded that you haven't: interest and direct credits to add, fees and NSF items to subtract.
  • If a difference remains, look for transpositions (differences divisible by 9), amounts posted on the wrong side (half the difference) or missing transactions.

Reconcile faster with converted statements

Most differences come from transactions missing in the ledger. Converting the statement to Excel lets you match both lists with a lookup instead of ticking items by hand. Read how to reconcile a bank statement for the full method.

Frequently asked questions

What is a deposit in transit?

A deposit recorded in your books before the statement date that the bank posts afterwards. It is added to the bank balance in a reconciliation.

What is an outstanding check?

A check you've written and recorded that hasn't cleared the bank by the statement date. It is subtracted from the bank balance.

Which side do bank fees go on?

Bank fees appear on the statement but usually not yet in your books, so they are subtracted from the book balance and then recorded in the ledger.
