Statement period

Definition

The date range a bank statement covers, usually one calendar month or a billing cycle.

Periods don't always align with calendar months — credit cards often run mid-month to mid-month. Transactions dated outside the period can indicate a parsing error or a wrong year.

  • Opening balance

    The account balance at the start of the statement period, also called beginning, previous or brought-forward balance.

  • Closing balance

    The account balance at the end of the statement period, also called ending, new or carried-forward balance.
