How statements in the UK are laid out

UK statements usually start with a 'balance brought forward' line, list Paid out / Paid in / Balance columns and end with 'balance carried forward'. Dates are often printed as '05 Jan 24'.

Amounts and dates

Amounts use 1,234.56. Many UK statements mark credits with 'CR' or show overdrawn balances with 'OD' or 'D' rather than a minus sign.

The usual date format is DD/MM/YYYY. When a statement is ambiguous we use the statement period and other rows to decide the order.

Account identifiers

Accounts are identified by a six-digit sort code and an eight-digit account number.

Accounting software

The most common destinations in the UK are Xero, Sage, QuickBooks Online, FreeAgent, Excel. Every export format is included on every plan.

Why statements still matter

Open Banking makes CSV downloads common for recent months, but PDF statements remain the standard for older periods, audits and mortgage applications.

Frequently asked questions

Does the converter support GBP statements?

Yes. Amounts in pounds sterling are read with the local number format and the currency is carried into Excel, OFX and QBO exports.

What if my bank in the UK isn't listed?

Upload it anyway — there are no bank templates. The reconciliation check confirms whether every transaction was captured.

Which date format will my export use?

Excel and OFX use real dates. For CSV and QIF you can choose MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY at export time; DD/MM/YYYY is typical in the UK.
